Der Fischerort Nazaré an der Atlantikküste Portugals mit seinen rund 10’000 Einwohnern ist das europäische Mekka einer ganz besonderen Sportart: des Big-Wave-Surfens. Tollkühne Männer und Frauen reiten die grössten Wellen der Welt. Ein Tiefseegraben begünstigt die Bildung der über 20 Meter hohen Monsterwellen, die sich stets nach Stürmen bilden. Der Nazaré-Canyon ist über 230 Kilometer lang und bis zu 5000 Meter tief. Er endet direkt vor der Küste.

Im November 2011 erwischt Garrett McNamara die perfekte Welle. 78 Fuss hoch ist das Monster, umgerechnet knapp 24 Meter. Das ist der bis heute offiziell gültige Weltrekord im Big-Wave-Surfen.

    Anyway – unsere blau Kugel hat so viel zu bieten. Es lohnt sich, besser darauf zu achten!
